Most adverse assessments have nothing to do with weak engineering. They come from career episode writing mistakes CDR assessors see on almost every desk: activity that reads like a project diary, team language that hides the individual, and episodes that quietly drift from the nominated occupation. The engineering was real. The narrative failed to prove it.

This guide stays inside one layer, the narrative construction of the three career episodes. Document-level problems such as CPD formatting and summary statement structure sit in a separate guide. Every mistake below is tied to the exact competency element or MSA policy clause it trips.

Why career episodes fail more CDRs than any other component

Do the arithmetic on one rejection before you write a word. Engineers Australia’s 2025-26 fee schedule lists the standard skills assessment at AUD $1,001, and the fee is charged again on resubmission. Then the clock starts: an informal review must be lodged within three months of the outcome letter and takes about eight weeks to process, after which a fresh assessment runs another 14 to 24 weeks. One rejection cycle adds a second $1,001 and somewhere between 22 and 32 weeks to your timeline. That is the price of a fixable narrative error.

Career episodes carry that risk because they carry the evidence. The MSA booklet asks each episode to move through three sections: background, personal engineering activity, and summary. It is inside those sections that an assessor scores your Competency Elements. The summary statement only points to where the evidence sits. If the episode never demonstrates the competency, there is nothing for the pointer to reach.

Narrating project activities instead of demonstrating CPE elements

This is the rejection that outnumbers all others. An engineer describes what the project did and assumes the competency is self-evident. Assessors cannot score an assumption.

How assessors score a career episode against the 16 CPE elements

Engineers Australia assesses against 16 Competency Elements in three categories: PE1 Knowledge and Skill Base (PE1.1 to PE1.6), PE2 Engineering Application Ability (PE2.1 to PE2.4), and PE3 Professional and Personal Attributes (PE3.1 to PE3.6). The assessor reads each episode looking for evidence of specific elements and marks only the ones your words actually prove. Rewriting an activity statement as a competency claim

Consider a line that appears in thousands of episodes: “We designed the drainage system to handle peak flow.” It names a deliverable and nothing else. No method, no individual, no number an assessor can test.

Now anchor it to a competency: “I calculated the 1-in-100-year peak flow at 3.2 cubic metres per second using the Rational Method, sized a 1200 mm reinforced concrete culvert to carry it with 15 percent freeboard, and cleared council hydraulic review without amendment.” That sentence now evidences PE2.1, because it shows an established method applied to a defined problem, and it hands the assessor a quantified outcome to weigh against the standard. The engineering did not change. The claim did.

Writing “we” and “our team” throughout a career episode

Real engineering happens in teams, but the MSA booklet assesses one person. When an episode runs on “we” and “our team”, the assessor cannot separate what you did from what the group did, so PE2.4, “application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects”, becomes impossible to award. Your individual management contribution is invisible.

The fix is not to pretend you worked alone. Set the team context once in the background section, then switch to “I” for every engineering decision that was yours. “The team selected the vendor” becomes “I ran the technical evaluation of three vendors against our latency and redundancy criteria and recommended the option we adopted.” Honest, specific, and scorable. Where a task was genuinely shared, describe your part of it rather than claiming the whole.

Choosing episodes that miss your nominated ANZSCO occupation

An episode can be well written and still fail because it describes the wrong job. Assessors cross-reference the tasks in your career episodes against the published task list for your nominated ANZSCO occupation and look for genuine alignment.

What the assessor checks against the ANZSCO task list

Picture an applicant nominating Civil Engineer (ANZSCO 233211) whose episodes are dominated by procurement negotiation, subcontractor scheduling, and budget sign-off. Those tasks map more naturally to Engineering Manager (133211). The assessor sees engineering management where the code promised engineering design, flags the mismatch, and marks alignment as failed. Before you select episodes, read the ANZSCO task description for your code and confirm the engineering activity you narrate is the activity that code actually describes. Where your best project straddles two codes, frame the narrative around the tasks that belong to the one you nominated, and check it against the pathway eligibility rules first.

Ignoring the 1000-2500 word guideline in the MSA booklet

Each career episode must fall between 1000 and 2500 words, as the MSA booklet states, and both ends of that range carry a signal. A 700-word episode tells the assessor you had too little personal engineering to describe, which invites a closer look at whether the competencies are really there. Short episodes read as thin evidence, not welcome brevity.

Padding to reach the ceiling fails for the mirror-image reason. Adding three paragraphs of background theory, standards you did not apply, or restated project scope adds no scorable competency claims. Length only helps when the extra words carry extra engineering: another decision you made, another method you applied, another result you can quantify. Word count is a proxy for evidence, never a substitute for it.

Career episodes flagged for plagiarism or third-party CDR writing

The MSA booklet is explicit: “Career Episodes must be based on work conducted personally by you and must be written entirely in your own words.” Presenting another person’s work or words, including templates, sample episodes, and online sources, constitutes plagiarism. Engineers Australia checks submissions through Turnitin and holds a database of previously submitted CDRs, so a “sample” episode that helped someone else already sits in the system waiting to match yours.

The consequences are not a polite request to rewrite. A plagiarism finding can carry a ban of 12 to 36 months and trigger mandatory notification to the Department of Home Affairs, which reaches directly into your visa application. Measured against a fixable writing error, that is a different order of harm.

How AI detection now extends the plagiarism check

The same Turnitin process now flags AI-generated writing patterns, and Engineers Australia reportedly treats an AI-pattern finding as a breach of MSA rules that can see your name recorded for future monitoring. Generic, competency-free prose is exactly what both a human assessor and the detector notice. Write from your own project records instead.

Leaving out measurable outcomes and engineering decisions

A project description tells the reader what was built. An engineering judgment demonstration tells them what you decided, why, and what happened as a result. Assessors score the second and skim the first.

Attach a number and a decision to each claim. Not “the system improved performance” but “I retuned the PID loop and cut settling time from 12 seconds to 4, which held line speed within tolerance at 2 percent above the previous throughput.” A quantified result gives the assessor something to test against the competency standard; a vague improvement gives them nothing to score. If you cannot recall a real figure, describe the measurable effect qualitatively rather than inventing a precise one, because a fabricated number is worse than an honest range.

Omitting professional obligation evidence (PE3) from the narrative

Most episodes exhaust themselves on PE1 knowledge and PE2 application and never touch PE3, Professional and Personal Attributes, which is a full third of the competency set. Six elements, PE3.1 to PE3.6, are left thinly evidenced or blank.

PE3 does not get bolted on at the end. Show PE3.1, ethical conduct and professional accountability, at the moment it actually occurred: the time you raised a safety non-conformance, refused to sign off on incomplete test data, or flagged a design assumption that affected public risk. Show PE3.3, creative and innovative demeanour, where you departed from the standard approach and can explain your reasoning. These belong in the personal engineering activity section, woven into the decisions themselves, and named again in the summary. Forced into a closing paragraph of ethics platitudes, they read as filler and score as nothing.

Self-audit your career episodes for these writing mistakes

Before submission, run a pass/fail question against each of the three CPE categories for every episode:

PE1 Knowledge and Skill Base (PE1.1-PE1.6)

Pass: The episode names specific engineering principles, standards, or methods you applied and explains why each was appropriate for the problem.

Fail: The narrative describes outcomes or deliverables without identifying the knowledge base that produced them.

PE2 Engineering Application Ability (PE2.1-PE2.4)

Pass: Each claim shows a named method applied to a defined problem (PE2.1), a design decision with your reasoning (PE2.2), a risk or safety consideration you addressed (PE2.3), and project management actions that were yours alone (PE2.4).

Fail: Sentences narrate what the project delivered without first-person engineering verbs or quantified results.

PE3 Professional and Personal Attributes (PE3.1-PE3.6)

Pass: At least one concrete moment of professional accountability (PE3.1), a departure from the standard approach with your reasoning (PE3.3), and evidence of communication or teamwork in an engineering context (PE3.5) appear inside the activity section, not as a closing paragraph.

Fail: PE3 evidence is absent, generic, or confined to a single summary sentence at the end.

Work through all 16 elements. Any element you cannot answer with a specific sentence is one you have not evidenced. The same discipline, framed positively, runs through ten ways to write a perfect CDR.

Five red flags that mirror what assessors look for

Scan for these before you submit:

1. The pronoun “we” carries an engineering decision anywhere in the episode.

2. A paragraph contains no first-person verb of engineering judgment.

3. The project tasks match a different ANZSCO code than the one you nominated.

4. A section describes outcomes without a single quantified result.

5. An episode reuses a project already covered elsewhere, when the booklet requires three distinct engineering activities.

Each flag marks a place an assessor stops scoring.

Can I use the same project for two different career episodes?

No. Engineers Australia requires three career episodes covering three distinct engineering activities. Two episodes drawn from the same project read as one body of work split to fill a quota, and assessors flag the overlap. You can draw episodes from different phases of a long, complex project only if each demonstrates genuinely separate engineering activity and competencies.

What word count does Engineers Australia expect per career episode?
