Why Summary Statement Errors Slip Past Your Own Review
A career episode reads like an essay, so a weak sentence stands out. The summary statement reads like a spreadsheet, and that is exactly why its errors hide. Every cell can look complete, formatted, and populated while being structurally broken. Prose gets proofread for quality out of habit. Almost nobody audits a grid for cross-reference integrity, because it rarely occurs to applicants that the grid is where the assessment can stall.
The reference check that runs before your prose is read
Before an assessor weighs whether your work meets a competency, they confirm the map is honest. Each element points to a career episode paragraph, and the assessor jumps straight to it. A missing number, a wrong number, or a reference that lands on unrelated content means the claim is unsupported regardless of how polished the cell reads. Incorrect or missing paragraph numbers do more than frustrate the reader: they undermine the credibility of the whole document, because a map the assessor cannot trust is a map they stop trusting everywhere.
What a valid grid actually looks like
Three columns, three jobs: the competency element (fixed by the standard), your mapping statement (the specific thing you did that demonstrates it), and the paragraph reference, written as CE1.5 to mean paragraph 5 of Career Episode 1. A valid grid populates every element in your set, anchors each claim to a real numbered paragraph, and never substitutes a page number for a paragraph number. Each error below is a way one of those columns fails.
Error 1: A Competency Claim With No Paragraph Reference
Consider two cells for PE2.1, the application of established engineering methods to complex problem solving.
Fails: "Applied established control-system methods to stabilise the plant feed-water loop, tuning the controller parameters after commissioning tests."
Passes: the same sentence, followed by "CE2.3".
The prose is identical. The difference is that the second can be verified and the first cannot. An unanchored claim earns nothing, however well written, because the assessor has no paragraph to jump to and confirm. Anchoring is the mechanism that turns a sentence into credited evidence, not decoration added after the fact.
Error 2: One Paragraph Stretched Across Too Many Elements
When the same paragraph reference appears against more than three or four competency elements, assessors begin to discount it. One paragraph carrying the weight of six is like citing a single source for every claim in a thesis: the reader stops believing the source genuinely supports all of it. Repeated references draw more scrutiny than they once did, and the imbalance itself becomes a finding.
The cause is usually innocent. An applicant finds one strong project moment and reuses it because it is the achievement they are most confident about. The grid, though, is meant to demonstrate breadth across sixteen elements for a Professional Engineer, and a concentration on one or two paragraphs shows the opposite.
A healthy spread of references across PE1 to PE3
Across three career episodes, you have dozens of numbered paragraphs. A healthy grid draws on many of them, so each episode carries a fair share and no single paragraph does more than its natural work. If CE1.5 anchors five elements while twenty other paragraphs anchor none, that concentration is the finding, before anyone reads a word of the cells.
Error 3: Blank or Incomplete Cells for Mandatory Elements
PE3.1, PE3.4, and PE2.4 are the elements most often left thin, because career episodes skew toward technical delivery and skip ethics, communication, and self-management. Every element in your set is mandatory. A blank cell, an "N/A", or a "TBC" draws negative assessor action and can stall the assessment outright. A placeholder is worse than a modest but genuine entry, because it advertises that the evidence was never found.
When your episodes only partly cover an element
Do not leave it blank and do not invent coverage. Two honest routes exist: find the paragraph where the behaviour genuinely appears, even if it is a minor moment, and map it precisely; or, if the evidence is not in your episodes at all, revise a career episode to include the real work before submitting, rather than papering over the grid with a hollow line.
Error 4: Paragraph Numbers That Do Not Exist in the Career Episode
If your grid cites CE2.9 but Career Episode 2 stops at paragraph eight, the reference is dead. The assessor counts to it, finds nothing, and the mapping fails on contact regardless of the surrounding text. Two related versions of this error are equally fatal: referencing a whole career episode as "CE1" instead of a specific numbered paragraph is not acceptable, and using a page number where a paragraph number belongs makes cross-verification impossible.
A cross-check to verify every reference before you submit
Finalise and number the paragraphs in each career episode first, then build the grid from that fixed numbering. The failure usually comes from editing an episode after mapping: a paragraph gets added or cut, every number below it shifts, and the grid now points at the wrong lines. Open each episode beside the grid and confirm that every cited number exists and that its content matches the claim. If you touch an episode after mapping, renumber and re-verify.
Error 5: Echoing Engineers Australia's Own Wording Back
Three versions of the same cell for PE1.1 show the failure precisely.

A passing entry for the same applicant, same career episode: "Calculated fluid-mechanics and thermodynamics parameters to size the heat-exchanger network in CE1, determining duty, pressure drop, and required transfer area before equipment selection. CE1.4"
Both cells reference Career Episode 1. The failing cell restates the standard's language; the passing cell describes the specific calculation task the applicant performed within that same project. The assessor already holds the standard and helped write it. The cell is not a test of whether you read the element. It is evidence that your specific work satisfied it. Applied work speaks for the element on its own, without any need to quote it back.
Error 6: The Wrong Template for Your Occupation Level
Using the Professional Engineer grid when you are assessed as an Engineering Technologist is a structural failure, not a wording problem, and it can invalidate the whole mapping. The occupational category you nominate, tied to your ANZSCO occupation, dictates which competency set and template you must use. Confirm your exact set in Engineers Australia's Stage 1 Competency Standard and the Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) booklet before naming a single sub-element.

The Engineering Technologist and Engineering Associate standards carry fewer elements than the PE 6/4/6 structure and address a different depth of independent practice. A grid built on the wrong category is discounted no matter how strong the underlying career episodes are.
Error 7: Passive or Group-Led Cells Where You Owned the Work
Every mapping cell must attribute the described work to you as an individual, not to your team. Applicants frequently confuse two separate rules here. The grid applies a stricter, more local test: the cell itself must frame you as the actor, not a participant. A paragraph can use "I" throughout and still map to a cell that positions you as a supporting player, and that cell fails.
Two entries for PE3.4 show the difference:
Fails: "Was part of the design team responsible for the substation protection scheme. CE3.4"
Passes: "Designed the overcurrent protection coordination for the 33 kV substation, calculating relay settings and grading margins. CE3.4"
The passing cell names the engineering action you personally performed and the outcome you produced. Strip the collective verb from every team-project reference and state the specific task that was yours.
Error 8: Knowledge Cited Without Showing It Applied
PhD holders and recent graduates run into this one most often. They map PE1 knowledge elements to thesis chapters, coursework, and publications, confident that the credential is evidence enough. It is not. PE1 covers the knowledge and skill base, but the grid still requires that knowledge applied to an engineering task, not merely acquired.
"Studied advanced finite element analysis during doctoral research. CE1.1" is a qualification statement. "Applied finite element analysis to predict the fatigue life of the rotor, then revised the blade geometry based on that result. CE1.4" is applied competence. The cell has to close the gap between what you know and what you did with it on the job. An academic citation with no applied outcome leaves the gap open, and the assessor reads an open gap as missing evidence.
