Step 2: Number Every Career Episode Paragraph the EA Way
Engineers Australia expects paragraph references in the CE[episode].[paragraph] format: CE1.1, CE1.2, CE2.1, and so on. The number before the dot is the career episode; the number after it is the paragraph within that episode. A reference such as CE2.7 means the seventh paragraph of your second career episode, and that is the granularity the assessor checks. Page numbers do not work. What a late edit does to every downstream reference
Here is the dependency most guides do not name. Once you number your paragraphs and start mapping, your career episode text is frozen. Insert one new paragraph at CE2.4, and every paragraph after it shifts down by one: your old CE2.4 becomes CE2.5, CE2.5 becomes CE2.6, and the shift runs to the end of the episode. Delete a paragraph and the same shift runs in reverse.
The table does not know this happened. Every summary statement row that pointed into that episode below the edit now cites the wrong paragraph, silently. Step 4: Write Descriptions That Show Evidence, Not Labels
The description column is where most rejectable summary statements fail, and the failure is always the same: the description restates the element instead of citing the work.
The MSA booklet asks for a brief description of the evidence. Brief is not the problem. Empty is. Compare two entries for the same element:
Flagged: "I applied engineering knowledge to solve technical problems."
Passing: "Applied finite element analysis to evaluate structural load distribution, identifying a 12% stress concentration at mid-span and revising the connection detail accordingly."
The first names the competency and stops. An assessor cannot verify it, because it points at nothing specific in the cited paragraph. The second names the task (finite element analysis), the decision (revising the connection detail), and the outcome (the stress concentration it caught). When the assessor jumps to that paragraph, the text will either back the claim or it will not, and the description tells them exactly what to look for. Write every row so it names what you did, what you decided, and what resulted.
Four CDR Summary Statement Errors That Trigger EA Requests
Four patterns generate the majority of additional information requests tied to the summary statement itself, and none of them reflects engineering ability.
A blank competency element row. Every required element must carry at least one paragraph reference. A row left empty is not an item the assessor overlooks; it is an immediate flag, because it says a required competency was never demonstrated.
A whole-episode citation instead of a paragraph. Writing "CE1" where the format expects "CE1.4" defeats the point of the exercise: it forces the assessor to read an entire episode hunting for evidence you were supposed to locate for them. What Engineers Australia Does With Your Statement After Upload
After submission, the assessor uses the summary statement as the entry point to the whole assessment. They read down the table, and for the elements that matter most they jump to the cited paragraphs and confirm the text supports the description. Blank rows, missed references, or coverage clustered in one episode typically produce an additional information request rather than an outright rejection.
An information request names what is missing and sets a deadline for your response. A summary statement error caught here is generally correctable: you can submit revised references, provided the underlying career episodes actually contain the evidence you are now pointing to. Fabricated experience cannot be added at that stage. The table can be fixed; the evidence it points to has to have been there all along.
